An advanced book for the serious instrument pilot.

Rod Machado's Instrument Pilot's Survival Manual is more about honing, perfecting, and feeling comfortable with instrument skills than about learning those skills from scratch as in the formal textbooks. This book will help you think and fly like a pro. It will help you understand the system, not just memorize it. And then, your decisions and actions become based on your ability to reason things out - a far better situation than merely having a few scattered facts from which to choose. Highly illustrated.

From the Introduction This book was born of the motivation to provide IFR pilots with answers to questions they most frequently ask.
These are questions no single IFR publication has ever attempted to address such as:
* How do I know those clouds have thunderstorms in them?
* How do I avoid icing conditions? How can I tell if icing is present?
* What is the most efficient way to scan my instruments?
* Is there a precise way to determine in-flight visibility at decision altitudes?
* What are some of the problems with GPS approaches?
* What is the best way to acquire confidence with instrument flying?
* How are instrument approaches built to accommodate human performance? These questions and many more are what this book is all about. And that is why this book is called Instrument Survival Manual.

Reader's Comments:

Best book I have ever read. It answers the questions that, if you were smart enough, you would ask. Only book I would ever read twice. If more people would read Rod’s books, the IFR system would run much more smoothly.
Dr. John Phillipp, Glendora, CA

The IFR Big Picture made easy. I like Rod Machado’s Instrument Pilot’s Survival Manual because his book describes the techniques, procedures and more importantly, the reasoning behind them. Learning to fly on instruments is so detail oriented that for many getting the big picture only happens just before the checkride. But we learn better when we can understand the purpose behind doing something. If you are learning to fly on instruments or you are already instrument rated and want to gain more insights about instrument flying and weather, Machado’s book is the one to buy.
D Schick, Master Flight Instructor, Eugene, OR

It’s a ball to read. After seeing most of the IFR texts available, I’d strongly recommend this book to anyone considering initial or brush-up on instrument training.
Bill Cox, Senior Editor, Plane & Pilot
